“I was born at a very early age to a couple of surprised and disappointed parents who had thought it was just gas. My parents moved a lot when I was growing up, but I usually managed to find them by dinnertime…”     So says Dr. Tomás Lafayette Picard in shedding light on the origins of his unique—and definitely askew—perspective of life.

The author of Mental Housekeeping launched into life with his tongue firmly in his cheek, looking for the humor in all the wrong and right places. Clearly precocious and mischievous, he used wit to cope with an unconventional childhood. The second of eight children, he was raised a military brat. Clearly humor was an asset in winning friends and getting noticed while attending twelve grade schools and four high schools.

Picard’s father was a major inspiration to him as he grew up, demonstrating the courage and fortitude to ”move forward” (literally and metaphorically) after losing a leg in World War II, ending his father’s career as a four-sport star.

After his graduation from the last of four high schools, Picard pursued an undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and then graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Missouri.

Following a year of post-doctoral physiotherapy study and an internship at a large five-doctor clinic in Florida, he received an offer to take part in a multi-year research project being conducted by the Italian government on the efficacy of chiropractic on job performance and absenteeism. He packed up his young family and headed to Italy.

Today, he still loves to travel and has managed to collect stamps from more than thirty countries on his passports over the years. During his worldwide travels, he has spoken to audiences on three continents regarding alternative health and personal development.

An enthusiastic life-long student, Picard has been certified in such fields as acupuncture, reiki, clinical hypnosis, ayurveda, Network Spinal Analysis, yoga, meditation and the Silva Method, among others.
